Carbon dioxide is well known for triggering climate change, though it might have a role in keeping renewable energy, based on several recent studies.

The very first CO2 battery, created by Italian startup electricity Dome, keeps renewable Energy at industrial scale and might help green Energy compete with fossil fuels in practicality and cost.

The firm is evaluating the battery through a small scale factory in Sardinia and it is currently introducing the technology to the United States.

“The US market is a main market for Energy Dome and we’re attempting to be a market leader in the US,” a rep for the company stated to Electrek. “The huge demand for long – term energy storage as well as incentive mechanisms such as the Inflation Reduction Act are going to be important drivers for the market in the short term,” he stated.

Storage Solution

The storage of electrical energy created by renewable resources, like sun and wind, is among the biggest infrastructural hurdles. Because wind and solar and wind power are not always going to be for sale, engineers need a way to conserve extra energy for days when it is much less sunny as well as windy out there, or when there is definitely more need.

One apparent solution would be to make use of conventional battery technology such as lithium batteries, to keep the power. Creating massive batteries out of rare earth minerals is not just costly, it’s squandering.

On the flip side, Energy Dome’s CO2 batteries make use of mainly “readily available materials” like steel, CO2 and water.

In Charge

The electric battery, as the name indicates, works by taking CO2, which is kept in a gigantic dome, and compressing it into a fluid by utilizing excess power from a renewable resource. Heat is produced throughout this process, so the high temperature is kept in the electric battery, along with the now liquefied CO2, that is “charging” the battery.

To be able to release the electricity, the stored heat is utilized to evaporate the liquid CO2 back to a fuel, which runs a turbine which feeds back again into the power system. Furthermore, as the process is separate, no CO2 is dripping back into the environment.

The electric battery might be a game changer for renewable energy. Presently, electricity Dome is creating batteries which can store as much as 200 MWh of electrical energy. However we will need to find out the way it works as it gains traction.
